Water drips from the scorched home at Brentwood Mobile Home Park after fire fighters battled flames a short time ago.

No one legally lives in the burned home, but that doesn't mean its unoccupied.

Fire officials and neighbors say homeless people have been breaking in and spending the night, trying to get warm.

Investigators haven't determined their heat source, but say it started the fire.

“They may build a fire in the residence, they may run a heat source from some place else and having those heat sources in there like that are really dangerous,” said Greg Wormser, Lynchburg Fire Marshal.

This isn't the only case of squatting in the neighborhood.

In fact, evidence isn't too hard to come across.

The fire department says two brand new heaters and new pillows were found inside the home next door and neighbors claim they've heard noises and voices coming from inside, proving there's a problem.

Neighbors aren't surprised the house burned down, but fear the worst.

“It's going to probably happen to another trailer,” said Judy Deanda, a neighbor.

The fire department warned the park owner the houses need to be boarded up, before this happens again.

“All the trailers are vacant, if anybody needs a place to be warm it ain't going to be no problem for them to get in here,” explained neighbor, Jessie Dolinger.

A fire this morning destroyed a mobile home in Lynchburg's Brentwood Mobile Home Park.

No one was injured in the blaze, which consumed a home in the park's Lot No. 8, near the neighborhood's Lakeside Drive entrance.

After a 911 call at 9:56 a.m., fire crews found the home engulfed in flames. More than 20 firefighters were on the scene working to extinguish it.

No electricity or gas went to the home. Officials suspect two people were squatting there and the fire was caused by an "alternate heating source" left on.
