Historic Pulaski train station destroyed by fire
It's a new year and the Historic Train Station in Pulaski is getting a new start.
Piece by piece crews with Consolidated Construction Services out of Roanoke demolish the damaged roof and stabilize the building.
It's a building Donna and Rosa Mooney say has been a landmark in this community for years.
"It hurt when it came down yes it did," said Rosa.
"It's one of our iconic places and I just feel like it's something we need," added Donna.
Town council agrees with Donna Mooney, which is why it decided to re-build.
"It's very important," said Town Manager John Hawley. "The history of Pulaski as a railroad town. The train station has always been a part of that. It's really one of our last links to the railroad that we had."
If work continues as planned Pulaski will have its piece of history back in the town.
Insurance will foot the bill 100% to re-build the train depot as long as it's back to its original glory.
Another reason town council decided to re-build the train station just as it was before the fire is because it's one of the requirements for the depot to stay on the National Register.
Hawley says the demolition crew should be finished in the next few days.
The next step is getting an architect and engineering firm to draw up plans for the train station.
Then, they'll open up the table for bids.
Hawley hopes to have the train station re-built by summer 2010.
"That's what the community, that's what the town wants," said Hawley.
