The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is warning people in the Hardy area to be on the lookout for a man going door-to-door.
Investigators say the man usually knocks after dark, and asks for money.
Officers believe the man parks his SUV down the road, then walks up to people's homes and tells them that he needs money to call a wrecker, to get gas, or that his car has broken down and his wife or kids are in the SUV on the side of the road.
Investigators say in one story, the man claimed Robert Amos towing wanted $70 for a tow, and he only has $30. The man then asked for $30 or $40.
Officers tell us other stories the man tells involve handing a fake business card from the Lady Bug Co., which is a house cleaning company in Roanoke), and telling people that is where he works and that he will repay them.
Investigators say they checked with both Robert Amos Towing and Lady Bug Co. Both businesses tell officers that they are not familiar with anything, or anyone fitting these stories.
Deputies say in most of the incidents, the man is described as:
- White man
- Tall
- Heavyset
- Dark brown hair that may be wavy or curly
- Usually unshaven or rough beard
One officer spotted the suspect's car, but the man got away. The officer described the suspect's SUV as:
- White Jeep Cherokee
- Box style
- Early to to mid 2000 models
Deputies tell us incidents have been reported along several homes on Northridge Road in December, and Edwardsville Road a week ago.
