Suffolk animal shelter closed after parvo outbreak

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Suffolk's animal shelter has been closed following an outbreak of canine parvovirus that required workers to euthanize 12 dogs.
City spokeswoman Debbie George says the shelter will be closed through Monday. Officials shut it down last Friday after they learned that a dog adopted from there died from the highly contagious virus. Since then, dogs that became ill and tested positive for the virus were euthanized.
Shelter workers plan to clean the site to help stop further spread of the disease, which is spread through feces and attacks dogs' intestinal tract. Humans cannot contract canine parvovirus.
