Bullet holes were scattered across white siding and a black Mercury that sat in the side yard of a house at 251 Ross Street in Danville.

Scattered sawdust on the front porch marked one fatality.

Police responded to the home at 2:40 a.m. Saturday after receiving a 911 call of shots being fired. Officers found Latoya Hubbard, 30, of Danville, dead on the porch. Police also found a 19-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds.

The male victim was taken to Danville Regional Medical Center. His condition was not known at press time.

Neighbors said they heard what sounded like an automatic weapon unload on the house early Saturday morning. Bullets hit four houses on the street, neighbors said.

The shooting is the most recent of a string of drive-bys that started late last year, neighbors said.

“There has been several other shootings on the street,” said Capt. A.P. Jackson, of the Danville Police Department.

Shooters hit the same house where the victims were found twice in early June, she said.

“The innocent bystanders are the ones being affected,” said Bernardo Wiley, who owns property on Ross Street. “That’s the seriousness of the problem.”

Wiley talked with police after the June shootings and asked them to install a camera on the corner of Ross and Roberts streets, he said. The police told him they had a suspect for the shootings and didn’t put in a camera.

“I told them if nothing happened, somebody was going to get killed,” Wiley said.

Neighbors said they fear the shooters will keep coming. Some of them don’t sit on their porches anymore, and others said they’re afraid they would be targeted if they helped police.

Wiley was critical of police, saying they weren’t doing enough to keep the area safe. But he placed some responsibility on the community, too, saying that someone has to speak up and help investigators catch the people responsible.

“The neighborhood has been terrorized,” he said. “When that happens, everybody shuts up.”

Wiley said he and other residents will go to the next Danville City Council meeting and talk to the council about the shootings.

Police are investigating the shooting, and Chief Philip Broadfoot said the department does not discuss on-going investigations. That includes whom investigators speak to about the shootings, he said.
