CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - A Charlottesville man who requested the death penalty for killing an 11-year-old boy during a robbery last year changed his mind and instead will spend life behind bars.
Waverly "Eddie" Whitlock had said he would plead guilty only if he is guaranteed the death penalty.
After the 28-year-old was deemed competent Friday to enter the plea, a plea agreement was approved that instead gave him six life sentences plus 33 years.
Whitlock's attorneys did not reveal why he changed his mind and refused to comment after the hearing.
Commonwealth's Attorney Claude Worrell said the parents of Aziz Damar Booth agreed with the plea.
Circuit Judge Paul M. Peatross Jr. approved the plea agreement.
