Virginia Tech goes green with dorm renovations

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Virginia Tech is in the midst of completing renovations to dorms across campus. Much of the work being done will help make the campus more sustainable.

The university has a renewed focus on conserving water and energy in the buildings around campus.

Tech will have 8,970 students living on campus in 2009-2010. The campus has 46 residence halls.

We got a tour of Lee Hall and Pritchard Hall on Thursday. Projects in those buildings include extensive restroom renovations, and two new elevators in Lee Hall.

They are not just improving older dorms, buildings like the brand new residence hall opening in less than a month, will have many money saving qualities. The university hopes the work will lower operating costs, reduced waste, and conserve energy and water.

"The renovations we are doing, the new construction we are doing, we are trying to make living on campus a better place" said Katie Gehrt, Assistant Director for Communications and Marketing.

They will also be making it safer for students, installing over 700 security screens on dorm room windows.
