CLINTWOOD, Va. (AP) - Authorities have recovered the body of a
pilot of a single-engine plane that crashed in southwest Virginia.
State Police First Sgt. P.L. Cheek said the body of 57-year-old
Victor Owens Jr. of Telford, Tenn., was found at 4:30 p.m. Sunday
on Pine Mountain outside Clintwood near Virginia-Kentucky border.
He was the only person on the Mooney M20-D.
A Civil Air Patrol crew spotted the wreckage during an aerial
search. Cheek says it took searchers an hour to reach the site
because of the terrain is accessible only on foot or with
all-terrain vehicles.
Cheek said Monday that Owens was en route from Elizabethon,
Tenn., to Ashland, Ky., when air traffic controllers lost contact
with him Friday.
Federal investigators were expected to arrive at the site Monday
afternoon.
