Hardy fire chief case goes to grand jury

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The case of a local volunteer fire chief accused of spending department money on himself and his family will go to the grand jury.

Jeff Shifflett waived his preliminary hearing Wednesday.

Shifflett is suspended from his positions as chief of the Hardy Fire Department and as a deputy fire marshal for Bedford County.

State Police agents took items from Shifflett's home and towed vehicles away from his Vinton property in March.

In a search warrant, police claim Shifflett used department money at Gander Mountain and Wal Mart and to buy a gun at a pawn shop. Court papers also accuse Shifflett of using a department gasoline credit card to pay for gas in his personal car and his family members' cars.

Shifflett is charged with forgery, so far. The Commonwealth's Attorney says his family members could also be charged by the grand jury.
