Roanoke gets "electric"

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Roanoke City has found one way to help it "go green." Electric cars.

In their newest effort to be more environmentally friendly, the city's fleet management division bought two electric vehicles.

The compact sedan and pickup truck, both manufactured by Miles Industries of California, operate off 72-volt battery systems, and reach speeds of 28 miles per hour.

Ken Bernard, fleet manager for Roanoke, explained that the new vehicles will be affordable for the city. He estimates the monthly expense to recharge the battery in each vehicle to be about $8 a month.

The sedan will be used primarily in Downtown Roanoke for code enforcement and inspections, while the truck will be used in the city's parks and greenways.

Bernard said Roanoke is the first city in the state to purchase electric cars.
