Virginia food banks get money from state to help needy people

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Local food banks are happy to hear the state wants to help them help others.

As we first reported yesterday, the General Assembly approved Governor Tim Kaine's request for $1million to be given to food banks as an emergency food purchase program.

Interfaith Food Pantry in Blacksburg gets some of its food from a the Second Harvest food bank and says the big bucks from the state would help them help more people.

This morning, Interfaith provided food to nearly 20 people, including Annette Hanes.

"It's great," said Hanes. "It's really great to know there's somebody I can go to and get help for me and my son."

The Blacksburg pantry is letting people pick up food two times this month, which is something volunteers say the extra money from the state would allow them to do every month.
