Campbell County budget proposals to be presented to public

The Campbell County School Board is set to discuss its 2009-2010 budget this evening.

When reached by phone Friday, Superintendent George Nolley said he expects to have a better idea of how to use federal stimulus money by tonight’s meeting. Nolley also anticipated any position cuts would likely be done through attrition.

Campbell County Schools officials last met to discuss the division’s budget Feb. 2 where officials estimated they faced a $4.5 million funding gap. During that meeting officials talked about cuts to programs, positions and most notably the possibility of closing Gladys Elementary School.

Tonight’s meeting will be the first time the budget and various proposals will be presented to the public. The board had planned to meet March 2, but canceled the meeting because of a scheduling conflict and the fact that stimulus details were still unknown.

Budget talks top the agenda, but board members plan to discuss a possible snow make-up schedule. While Campbell County students bank time by having a longer school day than required, they have missed seven days this year. Officials are also expected to discuss attendance boundary revisions for Concord Elementary School.

The Campbell County School Board meets in the county’s technical center, located at 194 Dennis Riddle Drive, at 7 p.m.
