The Rockbridge County Sheriff's Office says one man is dead after a drowning in the Devil's Kitchen area of Goshen.
It happened around 1:30 Sunday afternoon.
Deputies say the male victim was from Greensboro.
They say he was with a party of 11 other kayakers about 10 miles east of Route 39 in Goshen.
Other people in the party told deputies the victim was thrown into the water after his kayak got caught in the current and flipped.
Goshen Fire Company, Goshen Rescue, Rockbridge Co., Buena Vista Water Rescue and Fairfield Rescue all responded within 10 minutes of the call.
Crews found the victim approximately 7 to 9 feet deep in the water when they arrived.
It took crews appoximately 30 minutes to pull the victim out of the water because the current was pushing him up against rocks.
No one else in the party was hurt.
