With the economy in crisis, more and more of people are finding they need help to feed their families. You can help with the annual stamp out hunger food drive this weekend.
The Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank announced a goal of 209,000 pounds of food for this weekend. Last year, families donated a little more than 204,500 pounds of food, the most in Virginia.
The food bank says one in four people in southwest Virginia struggle with hunger. A survey by Feeding America found a 30% increase in requests for emergency help from food banks.
Pamela Irvine, President of the Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank, explained why the need is even greater this year. “When companies have to make tough choices, employees and individuals in our communities have to make tough choices which is, do we keep our house, keep our car, or do we buy food," Irvine said.
You can help by putting non-perishable food in a bag and leaving it at your mailbox for mail carriers to pick-up this Saturday.
