Elliston community keeps roads, medians cut when State cuts mowing

»  Comments | Post a Comment

With budget cuts statewide many localities have been forced to cut back on expenses such as mowing grass.

One local community in Montgomery County has stepped up to help keep the area look nice.

Many residents in Elliston and Shawsville have been mowing the grass in the medians for years free of charge.

Residents like Barry Price and Phillip Roupe who runs a lawn service company, have taken it upon themselves to take care of the landscape even if the state can't.

They tell 10 On Your Side the community takes a lot of pride in the area's appearance.

Under VDOT's new plan, the stretch of Route 460 through Elliston will only be mowed twice per year.

VDOT hopes to save $20 million from its statewide mowing reductions.
