Appomattox County Schools Superintendent Aldridge Boone, who has only been at the helm of the division for about two years, announced Thursday he will resign, although not immediately.

During a closed session meeting Thursday, Boone gave school board members his letter of resignation. It stated he will not seek or accept renewal of his contract that expires in June 2010.

Wesley Williams, board chairman, said officials were surprised by Boone’s decision. When asked if Boone told the board why he was resigning, Williams could not identify what led to the decision.

“There was a discussion, and it was long and varied and I’m not sure I could pick out a specific reason,” Williams said.

He also noted the board is in the beginning of Boone’s annual evaluation, which has been changed somewhat this year to include private interviews with community members and division personnel.
