PEARISBURG, Va. (AP) - Supporters of federal protection for a 19-mile stretch of the New River haven't given up, even though the National Park Service has recommended against the action.
The Giles County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday passed a resolution supporting designation of the stretch as a wild and scenic river. Six miles are in the county, with the rest in West Virginia.
The Army Corps of Engineers owns all the property along the segment, but river outfitter Britt Stoudenmire says the protection is still needed to ensure no dams or power lines are built.
The Park Service says the segment qualifies for protection, but it's not suitable because state and local support are lacking. It's taking public comments until Friday.
Congress and the President have the final say.
