Franklin County joined Roanoke City and Roanoke County Thursdy morning as a member of the Western Virginia Water Authority (WVWA).
During a public hearing in Vinton, Roanoke City Council, the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors, the Franklin County Board of Supervisors, and the Board of Directors for the WVWA approved the measure.
Previously, the WVWA and Franklin County have worked together to acquire several private water systems in the Smith Mountain Lake area, and to get money to extend the Westlake water system along Scruggs Road according to a news release. Franklin County is also working with Roanoke County to extend water to the Wirtz Plateau area along the Route 220 water line
The WVWA will also acquire the Westlake sewer system according to the release, making public sewer service available to businesses in the area, as well as taking the first step toward public sewer system for Franklin County.
