Dan River dropping in Danville, South Boston still threatened

The river at Danville reached about 6.5 feet above flood stage early Friday. Forecast 10 feet above flood stage in South Boston for Saturday.

Danville may see some good news from the flooding.

The Dan River at Danville hit a high of 23.56 feet early Friday morning, and as of 8:45 a.m. it had dropped to 23.42 feet. Flood stage at Danville is 17 feet.

10 On Your Side's Jarett Henshaw is in Danville once again this morning, and will bring you updates on the flooding as he gets them, as well as tonight on WSLS at 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

However, South Boston is next in the danger zone. The National Weather Service forecasts the Dan River to crest around 29 feet at South Boston. Flood stage there is 19 feet.

According to National Weather Service records, the highest recorded flood at South Boston was 33.37 feet back on June 24, 1972. More recently this decade, the Dan River had its 6th worst flood at South Boston back on March 23, 2003, when it crested at 30.73 feet.
