Rockbridge County creating Geocache trail for tourism

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Geocachers love to travel, love to go to new areas to seek out caches, love to explore,” said fellow geocacher Chuck Steenburgh.

Lexington, Buena Vista, and Rockbridge County wanted to get a piece of the action, so they're creating a geocaching trail for next summer

But what is geocaching?

"Geocaching is an activity that combines the best of technology and nature. It's kind of like an online treasure hunt via using GPS,” said Steenburgh.

Steenburgh shows us how the hobby works.

"This is telling me that we've got a cache about 90 feet on the other side of this stream,” said Steenburgh.

The GPS gets us close and after a little searching, he spots it under this tree. He signs the log book, and puts the cache back for other to find.

Steenburgh's helping organize the geocache trail in Rockbridge County set to launch next year.

"The project was designed to help draw attention to the cultural and natural activities that are here in Rockbridge County,” said Steenburgh.

The Director of Tourism for this area says the trail should bring in thousands of people looking for the geocaches.

"Our number one goal is to promote tourism and to have and promote folks to make side trips off the Blue Ridge Parkway and down into the foothills,” said Lexington and Rockbridge Area Director of Tourism, Jean Clark.

Steenburgh says the high tech scavenger hunt will bring people into the area that otherwise wouldn't have visited. He says as geocachers are looking everywhere for these small containers, they'll be spending their money all over the county as well.

As an added incentive, they will offer special geocoins for the first 500 people to find all of the trail geocaches.
