Ferrum, Franklin County, and Conservation Police were back out on the scene Wednesday morning. Investigators took measurements and searched for evidence that might better explain how Jessica Goode was shot and killed while working on a science project in the woods near Ferrum College. Regis Boudinot was working with good and was also hit by the bullet.
A reporter with our NBC affiliate in Washington spoke with the Boudinot's stepmother, Kimberley Boudinot, about what he says happened.
"They heard a gun shot and the young lady that was killed had been shot in the chest. She turned to my step son and she said I'm going to die and she collapsed on the ground and she was gone,” said Kimberley Boudinot.
Kimberley's son told her the shooter, 31-year-old Jason Cloutier immediately tried to help but it was too late.
"The gentleman who accidentally shot them actually ran up to them and called 911assistance for them. Everybody including the hunter was in shock and devastated and overwhelmed,” said Kimberley Boudinot.
Boudinot was severely injured as well.
"The bullet went through her chest and into my son's arm and exited his hand, taking a couple of bones from his fingers with it,” said Kimberley Boudinot.
Kimberley says her son was in surgery for three hours on his hand... but she says he's more upset about his friend's death.
"He's devastated, of course. This was a friend of his,” said Kimberley Boudinot.
She says she isn't angry at the shooter.
"I feel terrible for the hunter. I think this was a tragic, tragic accident,” said Kimberley Boudinot.
Cloutier bonded out of Franklin County Jail Wednesday for twenty-thousand dollars. His arraignment is set for December 2nd.
Ferrum will have a moment of silence for Goode before Wednesday night’s home men’s basketball game.
