Sarah Palin made her way to the Valley View Barnes and Noble on Sunday morning as part of her “Going Rogue” book tour. About a thousand people lined up around the parking lot to get her autograph.
Some were worried they wouldn’t get in, but Tess Lynch spent the night to make sure she got a good place in line.
"It was relieving because it was really cold and it was really hard last night, but I think it's going to be worth the wait,” she said.
Everybody brought along their books to be signed. One woman will give them to her children.
"My son, Michael, who lives in San Diego and my daughter who lives in Omaha, Nebraska,” said Debra Farley.
The big moment came when Palin hopped off the bus just before 10 a.m. with her youngest son, Trig, in her arms and youngest daughter, Piper, by her side. She was dressed in purple, not her usual red, and chatted as the line moved.
Lindsay Pugh left the store smiling.
"I told her my mom said hi, and she said 'Aw that's so sweet.' So she was awesome,” said Pugh.
Only books were allowed to be signed, a rule Faith Kostelnik didn’t know about when she showed up with Palin’s headshot. But Palin showed her hospitality.
"She said, ‘Well honey, if you have it out right now, just go ahead and I'll sign it now.’ And not only that, but she took the time to ask to personalize it for my son,” said Kostelnik.
Some drove 400 miles to get to Roanoke. It was a crowd so large workers didn’t think everybody would get a bracelet to go through the line. But Palin moved fast enough for everybody to get inside.
Palin’s parents came along and are glad to see the support.
"Here we found hundreds and hundreds of people that feel the same way we do, very heartwarming,” said Sally Heath, Palin’s mom.
The Palins left for the day on the way to their next stop, keeping it a family affair.
"This is a privilege. We each have to take turns. It's a big family and everyone wants to be a part of it,” said Heath.
As the bus drove off, people cheered and Piper Palin took pictures- just a way to remember how many people support her mother in Roanoke and nationwide.
