Viewers complain about consignment shopping story

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Last Sunday we did a story on consignment shops and how it’s a growing trend during these tough economic times. But, several people wrote in to complain that their favorite consignment sale wasn’t included in our report.

One viewer emailed, “I was very disappointed to see that you only featured one consignment event on the news this evening. Lauren's Friends and Alex for example, is a consignment event that has been in business for several years and is a wonderful place to shop for children's clothes, toys, and household items. In this tough economy it is nice to know that there are different consignment stores and events in the valley. As a consigner and a shopper I would appreciate knowing all of these options instead of giving select businesses free advertising.”

Beth Cross also emailed with a pitch for Lauren’s Friends and Alex Consignment Shop, writing, “For a local business run by one person, who has customers literally lined up around the building on opening day, and an extensive list of volunteers who are interested in helping get the event up and running, it certainly seems worthy of at least a mention. Channel 10 is usually so well rounded in its area coverage and fair in all aspects of its reporting that this omission is a bit disheartening.”

WSLS responds: thanks for the emails. I have no doubt that Lauren’s Friends and Alex is a great event, just as I’m sure there are many other very worthy consignment shops and annual events that feature consignment sales in our area. But, we simply wouldn’t be able to feature all of them in an 80 second story. Our reporter was able to include two area sales in her story, which highlighted the overall rise of consignment shops in the area.

Finally, we received a nice kudos note from Jim Sargent who wrote, “I enjoy the news on WSLS, and I especially think Karen McNew and Jay Warren do an excellent job of reporting the local news. Keep up the good work!”
