What started as a joy ride on a Montgomery County school bus ended with two Virginia Tech students behind bars.
"It's rare that you actually catch someone in the act like that," said Sgt. Nathan O'Dell with the Blacksburg Police Department.
Investigators say Alexander Telkowski and Aleksander Andreyev's night began with them tearing down and stealing a metal sign from Blacksburg Christian Church.
Police say they then went across the street to Gilbert Linkous Elementary School where they stole a school bus.
Investigators say they drove to Virginia Tech's campus and then back to the elementary school.
"If they were pulled over driving, they could have very well been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol," said O'Dell.
Their luck ran out when they returned the bus.
A patrol officer noticed the bus lights were on, which was odd considering it was 4 a.m. "I would say alcohol probably had a large part in them taking the bus."
The students are charged with felony destruction of property, grand larceny of a church sign, trespassing and public intoxication.
Both students were released on a $5,000 bond.
They're scheduled to be in court later this month.
