The Amherst County Sheriff's Office says one of its deputies shot and killed a dog, while making a drug arrest.

According to a news release, the deputy went to Madison Heights to arrest Jimmy Browning Friday morning, on two felony heroin distribution warrants from Lynchburg.

While arresting Browning, the deputy said an 80 pound pit bull attacked him, and bit him on the leg.

The deputy then shot the dog in self-defense.

The dog later died, and Animal Control has sent its body for a rabies check.

Browning is being held at the Lynchburg jail.
