Beacher Hackney, the man accused of killing two of his co-workers at The Homestead in March is still on the loose. On Saturday night, he was featured as the first story on America's Most Wanted.
The luxurious Homestead Resort sits in a quaint area of Bath County. When America’s Most Wanted featured fugitives from quiet places Saturday night, the double murder in Hot Springs led the show with a dramatization by actors.
We talked with Bath County Sheriff, Larry Norfleet.
“I was pleased with the show, the way it was put together. I think it was a very accurate depiction,” he said.
When people saw Hackney’s face on national television, the calls came in to America’s Most Wanted. Sheriff Norfleet says they received 21 tips nationwide and beyond. He read the list of places people believe they may have seen Hackney – from stores to strip clubs.
Tips came from Virginia, Maryland, Minnesota, Alaska, California, Texas- and even the Philippines.
The surveillance video was also released which showed Hackney walking out of the resort after the shootings.
“He was calm when he left the building and came out,” said Norfleet.
More than 6 months after the shootings, Hackney’s Chevrolet Blazer is still kept outside the sheriff’s office in the parking lot. Norfleet said it’s a constant reminder every day he walks into work, giving him motivation to find the man.
“I truly feel that he’s still living,” said Norfleet.
Sheriff Norfleet is grateful for the tips but believes Hackney may still make a mistake that will lead to him being found and arrested. Norfleet wants the 5’6”, 145 lb. man kept in the spotlight.
“It’s gonna make this very small man big in a lot of people’s eyes. He’s a cowardly little man. If he was a real man he’d admit to what he did,” Sheriff Norfleet said.
Norfleet said he believes Hackney may be getting some help.
