Lynchburg woman jumps out of window to escape fire

A Lynchburg woman was transported to the hospital Monday afternoon after she jumped from a second-story window during a house fire.

The woman, who lived in an apartment building on Hillside Court, between Old Forest and Langhorne roads, was upstairs when a grease fire broke out on her stove downstairs.

Firefighters found her on the ground and in pain after she jumped out of a window of a room decorated with Spiderman curtains, approximately 15 feet from the ground. She was put on a stretcher and transported to Lynchburg General Hospital.

Fire Battalion Chief Fred Mills said the woman had no obvious broken bones. He said that the fire, which started at roughly

4:10 p.m., was relatively minor and that firefighters put it out quickly.

He estimated heavy damage for the kitchen, but only potential light smoke damage for the rest of the house.

At about 7:15 that morning, firefighters had responded to a Dumpster fire next to the same apartment building. Mills believes that the two are unrelated though, because he said that fires in Dumpsters are usually set on purpose, and the kitchen fire was the result of grease left on the stove.
