LYNCHBURG - A city sheriff’s deputy has resigned after he was charged with felony hit and run of a pedestrian Saturday evening.
Sgt. Christian Meacham’s resignation was effective Tuesday, said Chief Deputy Don Sloan, of the Lynchburg Sheriff’s Office. The resignation came after Lynchburg Police charged the deputy with leaving the scene of a wreck after officers said he hit a Lynchburg College student, said Capt. Brandon Zuidema, of the Lynchburg Police Department.
Sloan said he could not comment on the case since it is both a pending investigation and a personnel issue. He said Sheriff Ron Gillispie was notified of the incident and spoke with Meacham on Sunday.
Meacham served as the sergeant over transportation and firearms training, but he also performed other duties such as courtroom security and prisoner transports, said Sloan.
His position will not be immediately filled due to state budget cuts, Sloan said.
Zuidema said the student hit in Saturday’s wreck received minor injuries. Meacham stopped and spoke with the student and then left his car and walked away from the scene on College Street without identifying himself, Zuidema said.
He was later identified and taken to the city jail. He has since been released.
No other charges are pending.
According to the Lynchburg Sheriff’s Office Web site, Meacham was promoted to sergeant in February after six years with the sheriff’s office. He previously worked for the Blue Ridge Regional Jail for four years.
