The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) says it has awarded a design contract to make the Poff Federal Building in Downtown Roanoke more energy efficient.

The GSA awarded a $2.9 million contract to TranSystems Corporation based in Kansas City, Missouri. The GSA says design work is expected to begin this month, and be completed by the end of Summer 2010.

The overall green renovation project of the Poff building is estimated to cost $50.9 million. The GSA says the project will include a new curtain wall window system to reduce heating, cooling, and lighting costs, as well as a solar roof system to generate renewable electricity.

“Through a comprehensive, state-of-the-art upgrade to the Richard H. Poff Federal Office and Courthouse Building’s energy systems, we will help preserve this facility for generations to come, while saving taxpayer dollars through the building's increased energy efficiency,” said GSA Acting Regional Administrator Linda Chero in a news release. “The green technologies employed in this project will create jobs in both traditional construction sectors and emerging green industries,” Chero added.
