One on one with Bob McDonnell

WARREN: Thanks for taking some time meet with us. I wonder if you’ll play word association with us. I’m going to give you a word. If you’ll shoot me a word back if you can. I know it’s hard for a politician. Southwest Virginia?

McDONNELL: “Beautiful mountains.”

WARREN: “Tim Kaine?”

McDONNELL: “He was a good client.”

WARREN: “As attorney general?”

McDONNELL: “Yes.”

WARREN: “George Bush?”

McDONNELL: “Good defender of public safety.”

WARREN: “Barack Obama?”

McDONNELL: “Charismatic, liberal.”

WARREN: “SOL’s?”

McDONNELL: “Necessary measures of academic achievement.”

WARREN: “So something that is good?”

McDONNELL: “I believe it.”

WARREN: “Your opponent Creigh Deeds?”

McDONNELL: “Good family man. I will leave it at that.”

WARREN: “Speaking of Deeds, you barely beat him four years in the closest election in Virginia history. Here we go again. Is that what you though when he got the nomination?”

McDONNELL: “Yeah, it's déjà vu all over again. We had our moments of tough debates in a tough campaign.”

WARREN: “What’s more important, vision, or details?”

McDONNELL “Vision absolutely. Ronald Reagan is the best example of that. He didn't micro manage, but he painted a vision and inspired people to get there. That's why I have always tried to be a big-picture guy.”

WARREN: “What’s the biggest problem facing Virginia?”

McDONNELL: “I don't think there's any doubt it's having a resurgence in our economic strength and creating jobs.”

WARREN: “What’s your biggest fear personally?”

McDONNELL: “I don't have a lot, really. I'm pretty comfortable in my own skin. I laughed a lot, I spent 21 years in the military and no one started shooting at me until I got into politics. After 18 years of it, there's not much folks would say that would bother me. I guess the only fear I would have would be letting people down or disappointing them because I didn't measure up to their expectation.”

WARREN: “UVA or VT?”

McDONNELL: “I love all Virginia schools.”

WARREN: “That’s a politician’s answer.”

McDONNELL: “Well, they were both my clients. I'm a Notre Dame grad, so I would root for either one of them, unless they're playing Notre Dame.”

WARREN: “And if they’re playing each other?”

McDONNELL: “May the best team win.”

WARREN: “Thanks for the time. We appreciate it.”

McDONNELL: “That's the best I can do on that. You're not getting me into that hornet's nest.”
