LU administrator charged with burglary; neighbors relieved

»  Comments | Post a Comment

For the past year, neighbors off Spring Oaks Drive in Lynchburg have been on the lookout for a burglar. Police now believe he could have been found all along in the administration building on the campus of Liberty University.

Cara March says her home was broken into last November.

"[A neighbor] had actually seen someone walk straight into our house," March said. "[The man] broke into our house and the house next door."

Police believe Scott Alan Ray, who also happens to be the director of convocation at Liberty, may be the man they have been looking for.

Police say he was caught last Friday on surveillance video breaking into a home right up the street from March.

As of right now, he is charged with two counts of having drugs and one count of burglary for the incident last Friday. Police expect more charges, because they believe he hit multiple random houses off Spring Oaks Drive and at least one other home in a different part of the area.

The accusations have left Liberty students stunned.

"It is very surprising, yes," Garrett Messmaker, a senior at Liberty, said.

This is not Ray's first run-in with the law. He was charged and convicted of a similar crime in 2005. He was sentenced to two years probation.

Here’s what Liberty has to say about Ray: “Scott Ray was very honest with Liberty University concerning his past struggles with addiction. Every indication was that Ray had changed. So, he was employed as a ‘program coordinator’ within a division of Liberty University that manages events. His job performance was exemplary, he was married while working at Liberty University, and he even had a child about one year ago. Liberty University was very surprised to hear about these accusations. As a result, Mr. Ray’s employment has been suspended, and the Liberty University family is praying for him, his wife, and his young child.”

Neighbors along Spring Oaks Drive say they are happy police have a lead in the case.

"I'm relieved just because you never know if the person is still out there and what they were really after," March said.

Police think Ray may have been looking for prescription drugs. Now, he’s looking at jail time.
