Good news for Roanoke City Public Schools (RCPS). All but two schools received full state accreditation, according to new information from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).
23 of 25 City school earned full accreditation. William Fleming High School's status is still to be determined, and Westside Elementary School received accreditation with a warning, according to a news release from the RCPS.
One highlight from the VDOE, Lucy Addison Middle School became fully accredited for the first time in school history. “This is a huge milestone for our students, teachers and faculty. We have worked so hard each year to become fully accredited and now our persistence and determination has finally paid off. I want to thank everyone on the Addison team, from students to teachers, for realizing their potential and working hard to achieve academic success,” Principal Robert Johnson said in the news release.
“We are pleased to see so many of our schools making gains and meeting state accreditation standards. We are also equally proud of schools that continue to earn full accreditation year after year. Our teachers and faculty believe in our vision to become a model for urban public education and they are committed to setting high academic standards for our students. Our goal is to eventually see every school fully accredited in Roanoke City. This year we will remain vigilant in our efforts to provide staff and administrators with the educational resources they need in the classroom so our students will be successful,” said Superintendent Dr. Rita Bishop in the news release.
State accreditation differs from federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under the No Child Left Behind Act. Under state rules, schools must meet or exceed certain benchmarks in: English, history/social science, math, and science to receive full accreditation. The Virginia Board of Education sets the benchmarks.
