Liberty University Director of Convocation faces home break-in, drug charges - Sept. 9, 2009
RUSTBURG — A former Liberty University administrator indicted earlier this week on charges of burglary and drug possession was arrested Tuesday.
Scott Alan Ray of Lynchburg was released on a $2,500 secured bond, said Campbell County Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Paul McAndrews. He had been considered a fugitive prior to his arrest, according to court records.
Ray asked for a court-appointed attorney in a hearing Wednesday morning in Campbell County Circuit Court, saying his last day of work as director of convocations at the university was Sept. 4 and that he no income.
Judge John Cook appointed Lynchburg lawyer Grady Donaldson to represent him.
A search warrant was filed in Lynchburg seeking evidence that could tie Ray to surveillance video of a man breaking into a home on Spring Oaks Drive on Sept. 4.
The warrant states the man was caught on video taking two bottles of painkillers before leaving.
A press release issued by Campbell County Sheriff’s Office last week stated an investigator recognized the man from a 2005 arrest on a similar offense.
Ray was convicted in 2006 of a 2005 burglary, according to Campbell County court records.
He was indicted on Monday on four counts of statutory burglary between November 2008 and Sept. 4. He was also indicted on one count of possession of a schedule I or II drug.
Ray’s trial is set to be scheduled on Nov. 9.
