Janice Dinkins-Davidson runs Children’s Trust, an organization that focuses on educating the public about child abuse and preventing it. She says they've seen increase numbers in child abuse since the economy turned south.
"We know that poverty is a factor and financial stresses are a factor, it follows that a down turned economy would increase the risk,” said Dinkins-Davidson.
With a small budget for some brochures, children's trust applied and got accepted to the first ever Roanoke Create-A-Thon. These 40 advertising and marketing professionals are developing ad campaigns, websites, and logos for local non-profits organizations
"I think this is more making everyone aware of the issue of the recession and how it's effecting increases in child abuse,” said one volunteer.
The Children's Trust group quickly jumps into brainstorming for a print media campaign.
"You had mentioned something about stocks and stock pages and I was thinking that phrase and how everyone's talking about their 401k taking a beating,” said one volunteer.
"I think the idea of making it look like it's over stock pages or something like that,” added another volunteer.
"The creative teams are going to work through the night on the ad campaign and present their concepts to Children's Trust Saturday at 2 p.m.
Dinkins-Davidson says she's very excited to see what the team comes up with.
"When you take that level of creativity and all that talent and bring it to bear on an issue like this, it's pretty neat what's happening,” said Dinkins-Davidson.
She says she's very thankful for the time these guys are donating to help call attention to a serious issue in Roanoke Valley.
