VINTON - Students like Evan Owens know after school, they can grab a drink at home. "I just like go up to my refrigerator and get whatever I want out," said the 7th grader.

Evan and his William Byrd Middle classmates worked to changed that They're helping needy kids, one juice box at a time. "They just don't even get juice or anything. It's just sad. They just want to have a drink and they can't," he said about the kids he's collecting for.

6th grader Savannah Stalnaker agreed. "I'm very competitive so I wanted to buy a lot of juice," she said. The competition paid off. The sixth, seventh and eighth graders beat last years record, collecting 1,588 juice boxes. That's almost enough for each student in their school to have two.

"I just felt really happy that way the people that don't have a lot will have the juice to drink," said Savannah.

This is the third year the Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank has collected 100-percent juice. It's a nutritious option for children who often have little or nothing else. "The outcome was just huge," said Owens.

With every box brought in, students here learned a lesson as well. It's one more step in knowing character counts.
