ROANOKE - It's not too late to get in the race and take part in the Blue Ridge Marathon.
The full and half marathon takes place next Saturday to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the parkway and raise money for "Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway."
995 people, including at least one person from every state except Hawaii, have already signed up for the inaugural race. It starts and finishes at the Taubman Museum of Art in downtown Roanoke and runs along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
"It's going to humble them pretty quickly," said race organizer Ronny Angell. "It's going to be a challenge even for the veteran marathoner. Most marathons are pretty flat but this one here with over 3000 feet elevation gain, that 3000 feet is going to hurt but that 3000 feet back down is going to hurt even more."
If you'd like join the race, you can sign up online by Wednesday, April 21st, or in person by Friday the 23rd. If you can't run but would like to take part, volunteers are needed to work the water stations and marshall the course.
