A recent emergency message during NBC Nightly News has one viewer a little annoyed.
GR Metz wrote, "I realize that your station must run the emergency message every so often, however today you chose to run it right in the middle of the 6:30 PM National news. Why can't you at least run it say during one of the annoying commercials that you air, or maybe late in the night when no one is watching."
WSLS responds: Thanks for the email. I understand the frustration when one of your favorite shows is interrupted by an emergency notification. But, these messages are time sensitive and must air immediately no matter the show that will be interrupted. To wait even five minutes during severe weather, as an example, can be life or death for some people. And please rest assured that emergency notifications aren't issued unless there truly is an emergency.
The tragic accident in Rocky Mount that killed two firefighters got quite a few comments on our Facebook page and even a few phone calls. Some expressed their sorrow over the accident and their prayers for the victims. Others had specific questions about the accident.
Ray Rusmisel of Roanoke County said, "Nothing at all has been mentioned as to whether they or the people in the SUV were wearing seatbelts. Were they or weren't they? Can you let us know? Thank you."
WSLS responds: thanks for the call. We appreciate questions like this to make sure that we're giving the information that you most want to know. I can tell you that in this instance we did report that the firefighters were not wearing their seatbelts. We have asked about the people in the convertible and SUV, and State Police have yet to release if they were wearing seatbelts.
Finally, one viewer contacted us with a thank you for our coverage of Cara Holley's funeral...
Jerry Hunter of Salem said, “I just wanted to call and express my appreciation to WSLS for the privacy that they showed to Cara today as they did her service at the church. I think it was very commendable of the fact that you allowed the family to have their private time with the loss of the loved one and their families. I think the fact that you stayed outside and didn't interrupt the people entering the church and the way that you received the story was outstanding. And, I would like to thank you for your compassion.”
