A woman is dead, following a fire at a home in Martinsville early Thursday morning.
The Martinsville Fire Marshal's Office says firefighters received a call about a fire at a home in the 800 block of Smith Street at 5:03 a.m.
The first firefighters arrived in seven minutes, and found heavy smoke coming from the home, and a fire in the basement.
Firefighters say three of the four people who were inside when the fire began, had already gotten outside. Firefighters then went into the home to search for 47-year-old Wilhelmina Philpott, and put out the fire.
The search team found Philpott in a back right bedroom, but she did not survive.
Both the Martinsville Fire Marshal's Office and the Martinsville Police Department are investigating the fire.
