The freshmen class at Hollins University started off the academic year by participating in a program, called Day of Service.
Students were placed at various locations around the city on Tuesday, including Mill Mountain Zoo and the Roanoke Valley SPCA. The goal of the program is to encourage students to participate in community service activities during their college years.
Stundets at the SPCA said they enjoyed working with the animals as well as meeting some of their classmates. One girl mentioned that, "It is a great way to get involved. I didn't know there were so many opportunities in this area, so this is a great way to meet all of my new classmates, and it is just really a great thing for a day of service."
