First snow of the season

»  Comments | Post a Comment

It isn’t officially winter, but the first winter weather of the season has already arrived.

Snow started to fall during the afternoon and evening hours on Saturday, covering everything in white across most of southwest Virginia.

Temperatures started above freezing allowing some of the first snowflakes to melt and just make roads wet.

But as temperatures dropped, the snow piled up, leaving some a little surprised.  Bruce Sellars was surprised, saying, "I expected a little bit of snow, but this is a little more than I bargained for.  I've seen a lot of snow plows out, so they seem to be doing a good job with that."

The snow plows were keeping the roads from becoming an icy mess, especially for those travelling to area football games.

You don't typically think of snow for high school games in Virginia, but that's what fans at the state semi-final game in Gretna had to sit through.

Areas east of the parkway saw snowfall in the 1 inch to 2.5 inch range.  The New River Valley saw totals of 3 to 4 inches.  The western slope areas saw the most snow with 8 inches in Bland and 12 to 20 inches in the higher mountains of West Virginia.

The snow continues to fall which will be good for the ski resorts.  Snowshoe plans to open for the season on Wednesday.
