First cold snap of winter

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Clouds blow into the region bringing snow for some and a cold wind for all.

Temperature are running 20 to 25 degrees below average.

If that wasn't bad enough, the wind continues to howl with gusts over 30 mph.

Put all of that together and it is unbearable to be outside.

Roanoke College students were walking a little faster to get somewhere warm.

"It's surprising, I'm not used to it being this cold in December, shivered Roanoke College Student Jamie Golden.

But mountains make it even colder, especially when they are covered with snow.

On Bent Mountain occasional snow still falls on top of the snow we had over the weekend. That snow on the ground keeps the air colder plus. Also 2,000 feet above the valley floor the winds are even stronger making it feel colder than the valley below.

In the valley preparations are under way for this weekend's high school football championship games.

But the below freezing temperatures are delaying getting the field ready. It's too cold to paint the lines.

Scott Sampson with the City of Salem says, "our biggest problem right now is painting the field. It's a problem because it's a water based paint and of course we can't do too much work when it's below freezing."

The field isn't ready for a field goal attempt either.

"Wwe have the college goal posts up, so we'll have to change them out before saturday's championship games. The cold is not going to bother that but its been so windy its going to be a little dangerous changing them out in the heavy wind," says Sampson.

It's still fall. Winter doesn't start for two more weeks. So this autumn chill is just the beginning of a cold winter ahead.
