ROANOKE COUNTY
Icicles can be a beautiful addition to any winter scene, but when they're clogging gutters they can be more of a headache than anything else. Miller Roofing says they've gotten calls from nearly 20 people in the past week that are having ice dam problems. Ice dams can form anywhere along your gutter line but its when larger masses form that you can actually have more damage inside your home than outside it.
Richard Miller, the owner of Miller Roofing, says they are limited with what they can do to fix the problem. One option is to remove the gutter all together and then put it back in the spring when the temperatures are warmer. But, Miller worries about his crew working in these conditions as the ice and snow can make their job very dangerous. He said, "One year we had a lot of people go out and got hurt. I got hurt myself trying to take people's gutters down."
So another option is to chip away at the dam, but in some cases this can result in more damage than just letting the sun work its magic. Jerry McBride has lived in Southwest Roanoke County for 11 years and says he’s never had a problem with ice dams before. This week he’s seen ice dams form and cause leaks in his garage. However, McBride says he’s lucky this time, because he lived in Harrisonburg before residing in the Star City where he saw a lot more damage from the ice including the ceiling of his closet collapsing as water came rushing in.
