The Jackson River Sports Complex is covered in this winter's snow, but starting at the end of this month it will be filled with players and sports fans.
Between February and November they're booked each week with tournaments.
It may look lifeless now, but it is a growing money maker for the area.
Allen Dessler is the Director of Parks and Recreation and the Jackson River Sports Complex is sort of his baby.
After working in Salem out of college he used that area as a business model for Covington.
“I watched Salem grow with recreation,” said Dressler. “Really having had that experience in Salem and seeing what they were able to do and knowing that we already had some facilities in place, the opportunity to expand on others.”
One ball field turned into five here and other amenities started to grow around it.
At that point we saw the ability to attract people with recreation.
Another highly visible sports money maker are the Lumberjacks. They’re a wooden bat summer league and they play at Casey Field.
“This has really brought back a lot of enthusiasm to the area. They look forward to it. We have a great crowd, we average anywhere from 300 to 1,000 people,” explained Matt Garten, Co-Owner of the Lumberjacks.
While the complex is not as big as Salem or other sport friendly areas it has room to grow.
“We have another 20 acres we can develop. We also have some wooded land down here in behind our amphitheater that we can also develop,” explained Dressler.
Like Dressler says if you build it they will come.
