Virginia State Police helicopter pilot Sgt. Don Childs said his aircraft took at least seven rounds Tuesday in Appomattox County.
Police say Chris Speight shot at Childs chopper as it assisted in a manhunt for Speight near his home.
Speight has been formally charged with murdering his sister, Lauralee Sipes, and police believe he gunned down seven others in one of Virginia's worst mass murders in history.
"God was watching out for me," Childs said.
At least two of the bullets passed within "inches" of Childs, the state police sergeant explained Friday from a terminal at the Lynchburg Regional Airport.
Childs said he learned from a mechanic the chopper took at least seven rounds.
Our media partners at the Richmond Times-Dispatch also interviewed one of the victim's, Jonathan Quarles, sister.
The article details what police believe happened on the property.
