Fireworks light up the Star City on Independence Day

ROANOKE - The group, Sway Cats check the sound system for July 4th’s big show at Rivers Edge Sports complex, where they'll play their big band style music for a huge crowd.

"People can expect a great time,” said Organizer Pete Brooks.

He says they are expecting 25 to 30-thousand people for the Music for Americans show. Towers of speakers dangle from cranes in the front and extras are added so everyone in the back will be able to hear the music.

Nearby, technicians prepare the fireworks where they wire individual fuses to each of the eight-hundred shells that'll go up. The shower of lights will start around 9:30 and last about 20 minutes.

Supervisor Shane Kole is in charge of the big booms and said.”You're going to see a huge variety of fireworks from palm trees, to variegated affects, to crackly stuff. It's just a massive variety that you're going to see here tonight.”

Back at Rivers Edge, vendors are getting food ready. Norwood's Barbeque has been cooking these pork shoulders for over 8 hours to make them juicy.

Brooks says to come early because parking will be difficult since nearby streets have been blocked off.

"We really do want to encourage the use of the shuttle buses. They're quick. They're fast. They get you in. They get you out,” said Brooks.

Shuttle parking will be available at Virginia Western and the Elmwood Park garage downtown. Brooks says in order to get the best view, you'll want to get as close a possible.

"Everyone wants to wait till the lights go down to see the fireworks show and sitting this close and under them makes it even more fantastic,” said Brooks.

Bring your blankets, chairs, and cooler and come on down, just remember you're not allowed to bring alcohol or your own fireworks.
