LEXINGTON - Fire investigators and State Police are still trying to figure out what sparked a fire that destroyed a landmark in Lexington.
Investigators say, the Southern Inn restaurant caught fire sometime between 12:30 and 2:00 a.m. on Friday. Several neighboring businesses also suffered damage.
The Southern Inn has served the community for more than 78 years. Alex and Peter Macheras own the building, and their family ran the Southern Inn for more than 50 years, before selling it in 1989.
The brothers spent Friday afternoon surveying the fire damage.
"It's like losing a family member. I just have so many memories and you feel like they are all gone. Stories of people coming in and saying we met in this booth, and later we were married. It's gonna be hard," said Alex.
The building owners do have insurance, and hope to work with the restaurant owner to get the Southern Inn back up and running as soon as they can.
