RICHMOND - State Police say ten people were killed on Virginia roads during the Memorial Day weekend.
Troopers tell us that three of the deaths were motorcycle riders, including one man who hit a deer in Clarke County.
One of the ten deaths involved a pedestrian walking through an intersection in Newport News, who was hit by a car. Police say alcohol was a factor in the deadly crash.
Two of the six remaining deaths happened in Pittsylvania County. The other crashes happened in Grayson County, Montgomery County, Chesapeake, and Tazewell County.
In 2009, only seven people died in crashes during the Memorial Day weekend.
State Police say they investigated a total of 646 car crashes statewide over the weekend, and issued 10,780 summonses and arrests.
Trooper stopped more than 10,000 people for speeding, and 2,609 for reckless driving. Troopers charged 121 drivers with DUI, and more than 1,000 adults for not buckling up. Officers also wrote tickets for 307 children who were not properly restrained.
"For the past couple of years, Virginia has been experiencing a significant decline in traffic deaths statewide," said Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent, in a news release. "As of June 1 in Virginia, 11 more people have died this year when compared to this same time last year. As we head into the summer travel season, Virginians of all ages must make traffic safety a priority by using a seat belt, not driving distracted, obeying speed limits and never driving impaired," Col. Flaherty added.
75% of State Police were out on the roads as part of Operation C.A.R.E., which stands for "Combined Accident Reduction Effort."
