ROANOKE - "This is a really cool thing," says Captain Greg Staples with the Roanoke City Police Department. Capt. Staples has been seeing this project through since the idea came about in 2007.
In the next four to five weeks RACJIN will be up and running. It stands for Roanoke Area Criminal Justice Information Network. It includes Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Salem and Vinton. "This system just makes everyone more efficient," says Staples.
With one keyword search, officers from all four areas can tap into the other networks. RACJIN was designed for expansion as well, if more departments show interest in joining. "As we expand more will appear," says Rob Hilliard, Project Manager of public safety. He says the database is extremely secure and all officers will go through training before being allowed to log on.
"Everybody knows before they sign on what they are allowed to do and not allowed to do. They also know the consequences if they violate the rules," says Staples.
The system cost a total of $607,000 and is being paid for by grants.
