One organizer tells me each the 270 people who came in today got free health and dental care. She tells me they had the capacity to help an additional 200 people, if more people shown up.
Donna Smith's getting her eyes looked at by a doctor for the first time ever.
"Usually I can't see at night time. It takes me until I get right up on a sign to be able to actually see what it says,” said Smith.
Smith doesn't have health care because she says it isn't offered where she works. She's one of hundreds here at the free health care clinic put on by RAM or Remote Area Medical expedition in Buena Vista. Some waited up to eight hours to be seen. Smith's glad she was also able to see the dentist for the first time in five years.
"I had my teeth cleaned which actually took two hours and fifteen minutes to do,” said Smith.
All the supplies are paid for by donations. The doctors and dentists are volunteering their time. Every service is free for those who need it most, like Brenda Wilhelm.
"Does that hurt at all,” said Wilhelm.
She's complains of pain in her arm and says she hasn't seen a doctor in over a year.
"I though it was great opportunity to be able to see somebody for free,” said Wilhelm.
Welhelm's taking full advantage of the services. She also had a tooth removed and got new glasses. But she's most thankful for her time with the doctor about her arm pain.
"She showed what exercises and how to ice it down,” said Welhelm.
Smith tries on a pair of frames and can't wait to go home with her new glasses.
"I'm really excited right now. I never thought I'd actually be able to get glasses because I never had the money to be able to do it,” said Smith.
In total RAM helped about 687 total for the weekend, making a huge impact in the lives of some local people and their health.
