Uranium resolution turned down for second time

PITTSYLVANIA CO. - A Blairs woman’s efforts to get uranium officially banned from Berry Hill Road industrial mega park got a second rejection from the Regional Industrial Facility Authority on Monday.

Deborah Dix has asked RIFA, Danville City Council and the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors to each pass resolutions banning the mining or milling of uranium at the site.

The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors and Danville City Council both recently turned down action on the resolution.

When the resolution was presented to the RIFA board in February by Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors Chairman Hank Davis, it failed to get a second. When Davis re-presented the resolution to the board on Monday, it again failed to be seconded.

Danville Mayor Sherman Saunders, who sits on the RIFA board, said after the meeting that he maintains the position he has had all along, “It’s redundant to ban something that is already illegal in Virginia.”
